Biography
Monchy & Alexandra’s musical history began with their first hit in 1999, Hoja en Blanco. With an already long recording career they have established themselves as pioneers within the bachata moderna genre. The Dominican duo is composed of Ramon E. Rijo, better known by his diminutive “Monchy” and Alexandra Cabrera De La Cruz. Alexandra was born on October 19, 1978 in Santo Domingo and Monchy was born on September 19, 1977 in La Romana. Together with their privileged voices perfectly in harmony they sing bachata, a musical genre which has been enriched with very romantic lyrics and new sounds, making it more universal.
From a very young age Monchy took piano, guitar and voice lessons. He began his career singing in a Dominican band and received some recognition when the band was featured in a compilation CD titled Bachatazos. While Monchy was busy starting his career, Alexandra was enrolled in a local university. She auditioned before producer Martires de León when she heard he was looking for a female vocalist to form a group. Alexandra won the part and thus was born the duo that would eventually be known as Monchy & Alexandra.
Throughout their successful career, this duo has won the affection and admiration of a great number of fans of all ages and nationalities. They have found themselves listed at the top of the charts of several radio stations in the US and Latin America and in the most prestigious publications, specializing in the tropical genre.
Monchy & Alexandra received their first Billboard Latin Music awards in 2003 for the album Confesiones and for the single
Te quiero igual que ayer. They’ve also received various Premio Lo Nuestro awards for that and other songs as well as for the hit album Exitos y Mas in 2007.
