Biography
Oscar D’León was born on July 11, 1943 in Caracas, Venezuela. He never studied music, but his innate talent for it emerged at an early age. He grew listening to the sounds of the Trio Matamoros, La Orquesta Aragon, Sonora Matancera, Benny Moré, Celia Cruz, Mario Hernandez, Cortijo, Ismael Rivera and Billo’s Caracas Boys. In 1972, he formed La Dimension Latina, along with percussionist José Rodríguez and trombone players César Monge and José Antonio Rojas.
Oscar’s first major radio hit came in 1976, with “Juanita Morrell”. At the time, he was a part of the salsa group, La Salsa Mayor. Oscar had much success internationally in the 1980’s. He captured the attention of BBC in London, becoming the first Latino to sign a contract with the media corporation. He also recorded a live album in Amsterdam, and participated in festivals and concerts across the globe.
In the nineties, Oscar joined in performances with Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, India, Jose Alberto "El Canario", Tony Vega and Domingo Quiñones. His voice was heard in documentaries, soap operas and themes in productions of Walt Disney.
Throughout his career, Oscar has recorded over 50 albums, many of which have reached gold status; and he has received numerous awards and honors.
March 15, 1998 was declared the official Oscar D’León day in New York City.
