The urban regional sound, originally made popular by Akwid’s Sergio and Francisco Gómez, has since been dropped like a bad habit by other Spanish rappers. Akwid, however, is staying true to the sound that made them famous and ups the ante by adding even more banda beats and more guest appearances by traditionally regional Mexican acts like Jessie Morales and Los Horóscopos de Durango; their participation even comes with an added twist. The sirens of Horóscopos and El Original de la Sierra flip their usual mantra and sing in English for a whole new experience in Latin hip-hop. This is surrounded by another Akwid-style production of skits that have laced their previous albums; this year’s comedic installment … E.S.L. classes. Overall, the album is another reflection of the times and the second generation Mexican-American with his español mocho and his dichotomous interests in traditional Mexican heritage and MTV.
