Piano player for Hermeto Pascoal’s band for fifteen years, Jovino Santos Neto first project recorded in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro sails in the sea of Brazilian polyrhythms. The power trio, formed by Jovino (piano, melodica, flute and accordion) Rogerio Maio on bass, and Marcio Bahia on drums, dabbles their blend of jazz with samba, choro, and baião while leaving space for heavy weight guests to shine. Joyce’s sultry vocals in “Nanã” transforms this 60’s classic in a contemporary soulful track. The wizard himself, Hermeto Pascoal, makes an appearance on “Juvenal no Grumari” only to show why for decades he has been one of the most innovative and talented musicians in Brazil, soloing on a chewing gum wrapper and glass with water. Roda Carioca is a must have for any jazz aficionado. (SB)
