To newcomers in reggaetón, Tony Haze & Shaka Black may seem like just another duo in a long line of new acts on the scene. There’s Winsin Y Yandel, Alex & Fido, Rakim & Ken-y and Angel & Khriz. But Haze and Black have a distinct sound that fuses reggaetón with bachata and salsa. Yet the main engine in this music remains the central reggaetón dancebeat, called the dembo, a simple but bewitchingly addictive rhythm. Here, Haze and Black slow and speed up the dancebeat, adorn it with everything from R&B horns and hip-hop attitude to rap lyrics and salsa soneos and more. Highlights include the first single radio hit “Ella Es,” a percussion-heavy number fueled by haunting synthesizers and Haze and Black’s sweet vocal harmonies. There’s the hip-hop accented and bilingual “Give Me Dembo,” which also features rapper Loose Cannon. Then there’s the amusing “Dale La Tripleta,” a party tune driven by repetitive but catchy choruses and the sharp blasts from a cruise-ship horn.
