Ojos De Brujo
(World Village)

FEB 2008
With their self-described “jip-jop flamenkillo” that blends traditional flamenco music with turntables and hip hop beats, Ojos de Brujo has been capturing audiences everywhere they go. But don’t expect ghetto gypsies rapping about bling-bling to the beat of the cajón. Barí takes from flamenco, jazz, and Middle Eastern rhythms and adds Marina "La Canillas" Abad’s vivid, socially conscious lyrics and staccato delivery, which can easily spring into rapid-fire rapping. While songs like “Tiempo de Soleá” talk about the hardships of living in the streets, “Ventilaor R-80” and “Memorias Perdías” are proofs of the graceful fusion of urban flamenco. Bravo, homies (SB)
